Girl shot in back while standing outside NW Miami-Dade home

Akira Baki, 13, listed in stable condition

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 13-year-old girl is listed in stable condition after being shot in the back Thursday night while standing outside her home in Brownsville.

"All I heard was the gunshots," the victim's aunt, Chiaresh Sweat, told Local 10 news. "Then, like minutes later, seconds later, her screaming. Out of all people you wouldn't expect her to get hit."

Police said the shooting happened about 10:40 p.m., while the child, Akari Baki, was standing outside her home in the 6300 block of Northwest 19th Avenue with her father.

"The person who's shooting don't really care for who was around at the time because they got their mind focused on one person," Sweat said. "Bullets don't have eyes. You're not really shooting to aim, you're just shooting hoping that person gets hit and there's other people around."

Baki was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital where she is recovering from her injuries.

Her family said she is an 8th-grade student at Charles Drew Middle School, which is just a short distance away from where the shooting occurred.

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information abut the drive-by shooting is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
