Gunmen open fire during Walgreens robbery in southwest Miami-Dade

Retired police officer witnesses robbery, returns fire

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Police are searching for two gunmen who were caught on surveillance video opening fire during a Halloween robbery inside a Walgreens in southwest Miami-Dade County.

The robbery was reported Halloween evening at a Walgreens on the corner of Southwest 112th Avenue and Southwest 232nd Street.

Surveillance video showed the robbers wearing hooded sweatshirts and gloves.

Miami-Dade police said the two men held an employee at gunpoint and demanded money from the register. Video showed the men yanking the cash registers from the counter and trying to run out the front door.

However, a retired police officer was in the parking lot and witnessed the robbery.

When the robbers saw the man standing outside, one of the gunmen yelled to the other, "It's the police. Shoot him. Shoot him."

Video showed the gunmen shooting at the door. The bullets shattered the windows, but the crooks missed and the former officer returned fire with his own gun.

Both robbers ran out through a back door and into their getaway car.

Nobody was injured in the shooting.
