Expect more natural beauty products in 2013

Dr Heather Woolery-Lloyd says look for antioxidants in sunscreen

MIAMI – A Miami-based dermatologist expects more beauty products to include natural ingredients in 2013.

Dr. Heather Woolery-Lloyd says customers should look for certain ingredients and products in 2013, including antioxidants in sunscreen.

"The reason why antioxidants are very helpful in sunscreen is because an SPF of 30 typically blocks 90 percent of the sun's rays, but three percent still gets into your skin, and so when you add an antioxidant, it prevents the free radical damage from that three percent that gets into your skin," she said.

To counteract sun damage and age spots, Woolery-Lloyd says the best products use natural ingredients, such as licorice root, instead of chemicals.

"We're definitely, as the world gets smaller, learning about natural ingredients and oils from around the world that we can incorporate into our skin care."

Research shows $7 billion was spent on beauty products in the U.S. last year.

"They want to hear in a clinical study when 20 women used it for a certain amount of weeks they saw results, so there's definitely a demand in results-oriented skin car," said Woolery-Lloyd.

Trend forecasts believe 2013 will also see a return to natural in fragrances, including the use of clove, amber, and lavender.
