HIALEAH, Fla. – Tomas Muñoz, a Hialeah police sergeant accused of possessing crack cocaine and a crack pipe, resigned on May 9.
Police arrested Muñoz at the Ernesto Motel on April 27. He was charged with one count of felony possession of cocaine and one count of a misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to an arrest affidavit, police received information that Muñoz, 41, was buying crack cocaine that day before his arrest. Investigators saw him drive to the motel and enter a room with a woman.
Miami police officers assisting searched the room about 10 minutes later and found several crack rocks and a crack pipe, according to the arrest affidavit. During the search, Muñoz reportedly said: "It's okay, Hilda, it's okay. Things happen for a reason."
Muñoz had been a Hialeah police officer since 1998.
"We consider Tomas Muñoz' recent behavior as highly reprehensible and an embarrassment to the otherwise outstanding men and woman of the Hialeah Police Department," said Carl Zogby with the Hialeah Police Department. "We will not let this isolated incident deter or diminish from the fact that we have many honorable and hard working police officers who continuously endeavor to reduce crime and make Hialeah a much safer city."
Muñoz was Baker Acted on Wednesday after threatening to harm himself, according to an incident report.
