2 dogs killed, woman escapes Sunrise house fire

Firefighters say chemicals inside home fueled fire

SUNRISE, Fla. – A woman escaped a fire Monday morning in her Sunrise home, but her two dogs did not.

The fire was reported about 10 a.m. on Northwest 30th Place.

Sky 10 was flying above the house as firefighters doused it with water to put out any hot spots. There was also a large hole in the roof.

Firefighters said they saw flames shooting out of a window when they arrived.

Karen Fitzgerald, who lives at the house, ran to a neighbor's home for help.

"She was banging on my door," neighbor Vinnie Avesano told Local 10 News.

Avesano said he tried to help save the dogs.

"The heat was unbearable," he said.

Fitzgerald's husband was at work at the time of the fire. Fitzgerald, who uses an oxygen tank because of asthma, was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Firefighters said the flames were fueled by hazardous materials in the home.
