Jason Beckman sentenced to life in prison for killing ex-commissioner father

Son convicted of killing former South Miami Commissioner Jay Beckman in 2009

MIAMI ā€“ The son of a former South Miami commissioner convicted of killing his father was sentenced to life in prison Friday.

Jason Beckman wasĀ convicted of first-degree murderĀ last year.

Beckman used a shotgun to kill his father, former South Miami Commissioner Jay Beckman, in 2009. He was 17 at the time.

"You had no remorse," Miami-Dade County Judge Rodney Smith told Beckman as he announced the life sentence. "You even told your fellow inmate you were glad you're father was dead."

Smith said he knows it is common for teenagers to disagree with their parents.

"However, that doesn't justify you killing your parent," Smith added.

Beckman had his father at the top of a list of his enemies.

Alba Tapanes, a former teacher of Beckman's at South Miami Senior High School, was on that list. She testified during the sentencing hearing earlier this month that she felt threatened by Beckman, whom she called "socially awkward."

Assistant state attorney Gail Levine also read an email written by Beckman's uncle supporting a life sentence, writing how much Jay Beckman loved his son.

"It's a terrible situation, but the community will be made safe," Levine told Local 10 News. "The judge made a very thoughtful decision and he made the community safe from a very, very serious offender."
