Jury selection begins for man accused of fatally shooting Miami detective

Andrew James Rolle claiming self-defense in 2008 shooting of Detective James Walker

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Jury selection began Monday in the trial of a man accused in the 2008 shooting death of a Miami police detective.

Andrew James Rolle, 26, is claiming he shot and killed Detective James Walker in self-defense.

Rolle's attorney claims his client did not know Walker was a detective when he tried to get into his unmarked police car after a shooting in North Miami Beach.

It is believed Walker, who was off-duty, was visiting his ex-wife in North Miami Beach at the time of the shooting and that Rolle mistook the car for the getaway vehicle.

Rolle tried to get immunity under the state's controversial "stand your ground" law, arguing he only opened fire after Walker pulled out his gun.

However, prosecutors contend that Rolle had just shot another man and was trying to get away.

Rolle is charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Opening arguments are expected to begin later this week.
