'Ladies In White' leader to speak for Cuban Independence Day

Berta Soler will speak at Freedom Tower

MIAMI – Berta Soler, leader of the Cuban opposition group Las Damas De Blanco (Ladies In White) will speak at a Cuban Independence Day celebration Monday at Miami's Freedom Tower.

The event begins at 11:30 a.m., and is free and open to the public.

Soler is able to travel from Cuba because of recently loosened travel restrictions. She was also in Miami less than a month ago, speaking with the exile community at the University of Miami.

"We want a Cuba with liberty, a Cuba with democracy, a Cuba where human rights are respected," Soler told the crowd in Spanish. "But we are also fighting for a Cuba without Castros."

Singer and Cuban exile Gloria Estefan will also be at Monday's event.
