'She's a scumbag': South Florida detective caught on hot mic demeaning parent of alleged sex abuse victim

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – There is controversy surrounding the Key Biscayne Police Department after one of their detectives was caught on a hot mic.

The detective is handling the case of the gymnastics coach, Oscar Olea, 38, who is accused of sexually assaulting minors that he was instructing.

After conducting a formal interview, he was heard talking about the case with someone, when he called the mother of one of the alleged victims a “scumbag.”

“Shes a scumbag. She actually screwed up the first (inaudible) case.”

The detective in question is Fernando Carvajal.

The recording was taken about a month ago, while the detective was talking to one of the alleged victims in Olea’s case, who has spoken to him about her mother.

Key Biscayne police said the department is aware of the “unprofessional comments” made by Carvajal.

The department released a statement about the incident:

“We have taken immediate action and began an administrative review, which is underway. The comments made do not reflect the values and hard work of the Key Biscayne Police Department. We hold our officers accountable. The review will determine the disciplinary action.

Olea faces six counts of engaging in sexual acts with minors.

The charges relate to two alleged victims so far.

Judge Alberto Milan has since ruled to keep Olea behind bars until his trial.
