Father of man killed in Davie police shooting lost his wife two days prior

DAVIE, Fla. – An investigation is ongoing after Davie police officers shot and killed a man in a residential neighborhood early Friday morning.

The father of that man spoke to Local 10 News about the devastation he is feeling.

Richard Amann said his wife passed away just two days before he lost his son.

“It’s a shame that had to happen, I didn’t expect that,” he said.

Amann said the night of the shooting, his son Steven Amann got a call about his friend Frank needing medical attention.

“A friend called him in a rage,” Amann said. “His daughters, 10 and 12 (years old), said he fell down and he went in the car right away and that’s the last I heard from him.”

Amann said, regarding his son Steven, that the loss of his mother was crushing to him.

“He wanted to be with his mother in heaven, that’s all I can think,” said Amann. “He was real close to his mother.”

Police said the incident unfolded after officers responded to a medical call at a home located along Southwest 145th Avenue and 24th Street.

According to authorities, the victim’s daughter called 911 asking for help for her father.

While officers and paramedics were tending to the patient, Steven Amann showed up.

Body camera footage released by police shows Amann briefly speaking to the officers.

Police said the officers were confused as to what he was doing there.

Then, the footage shows Amann backing away and reaching behind his back. That’s when officers said Amann took a shooting stance and aggressively thrusted his hand forward from behind, pointing an object towards them.

Officers fired multiple shots at Amann, who they said was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

According to police, the object Amann pointed at them was a cell phone.

The man who paramedics initially were treating also died at the hospital.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the officer involved shooting, as is normal procedure.

Three Davie police officers who opened fire are on administrative leave pending further investigation.
