Man who escaped from Jackson Memorial Hospital apprehended

Police say Baker Act patient tried to stealing car, bicycle

MIAMI – A man who escaped from the crisis center at Jackson Memorial Hospital has been taken into custody.

The Baker Act patient escaped about 7 a.m. Monday, first trying to steal a car and then a bicycle, Miami police Officer Rene Pimental told Local 10.

Pimental said the man opened a car door and tried to pull the driver out, but she was able to escape.

When that didn't work, the psychiatric patient punched another man and took his bicycle, Pimental said.

"The officers actually witnessed this man throw his bike right at the oncoming car, which happens to be the lady who he had attempted to rob moments prior," Pimental said. "She stops the car. He falls and breaks her windshield."

But that didn't stop him. Pimental said the man stood up and tried to fight officers, who had to use their Tasers to subdue him.

The man faces several charges.
