MIAMI – A white powder scare Friday at the federal courthouse in downtown Miami is the subject of a federal investigation.
Authorities said the white powder was discovered in a package in the mail room at the Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. U.S. Courthouse on North Miami Avenue.
"We immediately initiated our protocol for a hazardous material," Amos Rojas Jr., U.S. marshal for South Florida, said.
Authorities didn't describe the package in which the powder arrived for investigative purposes.
"The mere fact that it was mailed to the federal courthouse, we take that as a threat," U.S. Postal Service Inspector Ivan Ramirez said.
Local 10 News reporter Glenna Milberg said six courthouse employees were decontaminated after coming into contact with the white powder.
"Their clothing were showered," Miami Department of Fire-Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said. "They were showered."
None of the contaminated workers was injured.
