Lake Worth native will be held overnight as precaution, expected to make full recovery

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A University of Miami backup linebacker was taken to a South Florida hospital Wednesday after injuring his neck during practice when he collided with another player.

Team spokesman Tom Symonds said sophomore Marques Gayot suffered a neck injury and was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

"He has undergone a battery of tests and will be kept overnight for precaution," Symonds said. "He will be placed in a neck collar and released (Thursday) morning. He is expected to make a full recovery."

Friends, family and teammates were since heading inside JMH to visit Gayot, including head coach Al Golden, who canceled his weekly teleconference.

Gayot has played in nine games for the Hurricanes, including all three this season. The Lake Worth native has 2.5 career tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

He is expected to be released from the hospital Thursday.

The Hurricanes (3-0) have this weekend off before traveling to Cincinnati on Oct. 1 for their first out-of-state game of the season.
