Transformer explosion leaves some 747 in the dark in Miami, FPL reports

While FPL is at work, police block access to area in Miami's Overtown

MIAMI – Onidia Martinez said she heard several loud explosions in Miami's Overtown on Friday night. 

Her neighborhood went dark and police arrived minutes later to the area of Northwest Seventh Street between 5th and 4th Avenue.

"The street is completely closed," she said. "The neighbors are very afraid."

Florida Power & Light reported one of the sounds Martinez heard was that of a transformer that blew up, after a live wire caught on fire.

Power was out in the area and some traffic lights were not working. As of 9:38 p.m., some 747 customers were affected, according to FPL.
