Man accused of knocking customer into coma lists mental, physical ailments

Roger Perry arrested in Dec. 1 attack at Miami Beach store

MIAMI – A man accused of knocking a man unconscious at a Miami Beach convenience store Dec. 1 told a judge Friday he has many mental and physical conditions.

Roger Perry, 53, was arrested Thursday in Palm Beach County. He faces a charge of felony battery.

Miami Beach police said Mohammad Hussein, 58, was standing in the checkout line to pay for his groceries at the M&L Food Market on Collins Avenue when Perry stepped in front of him.

Police said Hussein confronted Perry about cutting in front of him when Perry turned around and punched Hussein in the face.

Hussein fell to the floor and cracked his skull, leaving him in a coma at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

During his initial court appearance Friday morning, Perry listed the conditions from which he claims to suffer.

"I have spinal stenosis … and then I have bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder," Perry told Judge Maria Elena Verde.

A public defender asked that Perry be held at a hospital to be treated for his ailments. The judge agreed.

"Sir, you're going to be taken to the hospital," she said. "You'll be brought back to the jail as soon as they're done."
