Man arrested in connection with fatal Sunrise shooting

Doderick Woods-Smith, 32, accused of crime spree before shooting

SUNRISE, Fla. ā€“ Sunrise police have made an arrest after a father of two was found dead Monday night in a parking lot.

Doderick Woods-Smith, 32, was arrested Friday in Lauderhill after a brief foot chase with police.

Police said he committed a number of crimes before fatally shooting Baijnauth Ramsaroop, 38.

Police said Ramsaroop's body was found in a parking lot on the corner of Sunset Strip and North University Drive. A handgun was found near the body, but police said it was not the gun used in the shooting.

According to detectives, Woods-Smith broke into a car in the 2400 block of University Drive about 9 p.m. Monday. A witness told police that he walked by the suspect, who threatened him with a gun.

Police said Woods-Smith then walked across the street and broke into two more cars, which is when he crossed paths with Ramsaroop.

According to detectives, Woods-Smith attacked Ramsaroop before shooting him one time.

The crime spree didn't stop there. Police said Woods-Smith ran up to a third victim and demanded their wallet, but fled the scene without taking anything.

Police said he then committed another car burglary at the southwest corner of Sunset Strip and University Drive.

Woods-Smith is also wanted in the Bahamas for his alleged involvement in a 2002 murder.
