Man charged in fatal hit-and-run crash

Derrick Brown arrested, also wanted in Georgia

MIAMI – Police on Sunday arrested a 38-year-old man accused of killing a woman in a hit-and-run crash in West Perrine.

Police charged Derrick Brown with vehicular homicide; leaving the scene of a crash with death; leaving the scene of a crash with injuries; aggravated fleeing and eluding with death or injury; leaving the scene of a crash with property damage; and, driving while drivers license suspended with death or serious injury. Brown was also wanted in Georgia on a warrant for trafficking methamphetamines.

On Sept. 16, Brown fled from police, then crashed into another car, killing 55-year-old Monica Patterson, investigators said.

According to an arrest affidavit, Brown made several phone calls to the Gwinnett County Jail in Georgia and admitted to crashing the sport utility vehicle and running away.
