Man drowns after escaping police in handcuffs

Man initially pulled over for traffic stop

MIAMI – A man drowned in a canal Saturday evening after escaping police, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Police said they pulled the man over for a traffic stop on Biscayne Boulevard near 163rd Street. After police handcuffed him, he ran off, crossed Biscayne and jumped into a canal, where he drowned.

No details have been released on the man's identity or why police handcuffed him in the first place.
