Authorities said 25 firefighters were called to the fire at the home near Northeast 11th Avenue and 165th Terrace, where flames were as high as 15 feet.

"They broke the door," said neighbor, Daniel Pizzaro. "The victim looked like he had been trying to open the door knob (but) he just stayed stuck there."

Cook was taken to a nearby hospital where he was listed in critical condition. He died of his injuries Thursday.

Police said the home was abandoned and boarded up at the time for unpaid taxes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
