Miami police: Miguel Valdes was walking to vehicle when approached

MIAMI ā€“ The search is on for a shooter after a man gunned down leaving a friend's house, Miami police said.

The shooting happened at 2:24 a.m. Sunday as Miguel Valdes, 24, was walking to his vehicle, which was parked near 35 Northwest 26th Avenue.

Police said Valdes was approached by a group of people, in which one of them produced a firearm.

Valdes noticed the firearm and retreated to his vehicle for safety, but the offender shot into the vehicle, striking Valdes, police said.

The shooter fled the scene in a mid-sized vehicle heading north on Northwest 26th Avenue towards First Street.

Valdes was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center by Miami Fire Rescue, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

The motive in the homicide is unknown as the investigation continues.
