Man killed after falling into hole at construction site identified

Jose Felix Obando fell about 23 feet, buried in dirt, gravel

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – Detectives identified on Saturday the construction worker who was killed after falling into a excavation site Friday afternoon near the Hallandale Beach southbound on-ramp of Interstate 95.

Despite an exhaustive rescue effort, 42-year-old Jose Felix Obando died at the scene, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Workers on the I-95 expansion project noticed their co-worker, Obando, had fallen into the excavation site that was 20-23 feet deep.

The two co-workers jumped in and attempted to rescue the Obando but were unable to pull him out, deputies said.

A rescue mission began after 1:45 p.m. Friday by multiple crews. At 4:30 p.m. crews were able to recover Obando's body.

Deputies said the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause and manner of death. The incident remains under investigation.
