Man accused of shooting at Miami-Dade cops arrested in Tennessee

Police: Matthew Pryor shot Knoxville officer, barricaded himself before arrest

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A man accused of shooting at Miami-Dade police officers and carjacking a woman has been arrested in Tennessee.

Matthew Pryor was taken into custody in Knoxville, Tennessee, Miami-Dade police said Wednesday.

Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said the stolen vehicle taken in Tuesday's carjacking was spotted at a motel in Knoxville.

As officers approached the hotel room door, Pryor opened the door and shot a Knoxville police officer in the chest, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

Officer Jimmy Wilson was taken to a hospital and did not suffer serious injuries, Miami-Dade police said. Wilson was released just before 11 p.m. Wednesday. He has been with the Knoxville Police Department since 2006.

Pryor barricaded himself, but was subsequently taken into custody. After further investigation, it was confirmed that the man in custody was Pryor.

Pryor's mother said she was relieved her son was found, and didn't expect any of these altercations to happen.

"He can't hurt anyone and no one can hurt him," Elaine Pryor said. "I was afraid, I was scared. I didn't want him to hurt anyone. I didn't expect him to do this. I really didn't."

During a news conference Thursday morning, Miami-Dade police deputy director Juan Perez said officers with the department are heading to Knoxville to discuss the case. He also said Pryor may not be immediately extradited because he now faces more serious charges in Knoxville.

According to police, four officers attempted to arrest Pryor Tuesday on two outstanding probation warrants at his mother's home.

Police said Pryor jumped out of a back window in the trailer home and fired at Officer Darren Baker. Baker was not struck by the bullet.

"Most of the time we don't know where they are and we have to hunt them down," Perez said. "They're going into the unknown, so they are in a dangerous situation. The person who knows you're coming after them has the advantage every single time."

Perez said Pryor pointed his gun at several people who he allegedly tried to carjack, and was eventually successful in carjacking a woman in a silver Nissan Rogue. Police said no one was injured in the carjacking.

Perez said multiple local and federal agencies helped in the search for Pryor.

Pryor faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and armed carjacking.
