Man stuck knife in woman's eye during attack at Weaver Community Park in Pompano Beach

DuJuan Johnson working when suspect attacked her

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – DuJuan Johnson, 35, fought for her life Tuesday night.

Davonte Shanard Johnson, who is homeless and is not related to her, was used to sleeping at the Weaver Community Park, 800 NW 20 St., in Pompano Beach, where she works, witnesses told police.

"She is a very hard working lady," her friend and co-worker Eduarda Torres said.

She was there to clean the men's restroom, she told police, when he came out of nowhere. She told him the bathroom was closed. He pushed her against the wall. The 22-year-old attacker was strong. He was six-foot tall, about 320 pounds and was armed with a knife.

When he didn't let her leave the restroom, she fought back. He stabbed her in the face. She hit a urinal and fell to the ground.

She said she thought about her 11-year-old daughter Cambria.

"I don't want to die," she shouted in desperation. "I don't want to die."

Her cheek was bleeding, when he tried to stab her again. She cut her hands when she grabbed the knife to stop him, but the blade slipped. He stabbed her in the left eye.

He dropped the knife. She rushed to grab it and started swinging it. He ran. She left the restroom as fast as she could. Afraid that he would follow, she got in her car. And asked the first person she ran into for help. Police have the knife.

On Friday, she was at Broward Health North Medical Center without health insurance. She has been cleaning restrooms at Broward County public parks for two years. But the janitors at the public parks don't work for Broward County. They work for Deerfield Beach contractor MCJ & Prestige.

"The man was out to kill her," said Torres, who also works for MCJ & Prestige.

Broward Sheriff's Office deputies learned the man was a regular at the park and arrested him Thursday at a relative's home. He admitted to attacking her and was charged with premeditated attempted murder. He is being held at the main jail without bond.
