Martinez was traveling north in the southbound lanes when a deputy on patrol spotted the wrong-way Chrysler and attempted a traffic stop, sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

She said Martinez refused to stop, speeding through Key Colony Beach before crashing his car into a fence, a pole and a tree. The rental car caught fire after the crash.

Martinez then ran off, but he was quickly apprehended and taken to Fisherman's Hospital to be treated for his injuries, Herrin said.

He faces charges of fleeing and eluding police, resisting arrest, leaving the scene of a crash and driving on the wrong side of the road.
