MDCPS launches initiative to prevent vehicular heat stroke

Heat stroke leading cause of non-crash, vehicular-related deaths in children

MIAMI ā€“ They're your most precious gifts, but every day your children can be just moments away from the dangers of South Florida's high temperatures.

Heat stroke is the leading cause of non-crash, vehicle-related deaths in children in the U.S. Therefore, Miami-Dade Public Schools along with Nicklaus Children's Hospital and Safe Kids of Miami-Dade are launching the "Please Don't Leave Me" campaign to prevent heat stroke.

Their goal is to hand out as many reminder cards to parents and care givers throughout South Florida. On the cards are helpful tips on how to be prepared and how to prevent a tragedy in the brutal heat.

At first thought, most people can't imagine ever forgetting their child in a car, but first-time dad Robert Gonzalez knows it's better to be safe than sorry.

"We all get so busy with our phones and agendas that you can forget your baby is back there," Gonzalez said. "It's great to have a reminder."

With summer right around the corner and temperatures already reaching the mid 90's, Malvina Duncan, a registered nurse at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, said it's important to know what can happen to your child in those conditions. Taking an extra step, like placing a necessary item in your back seat as a reminder, could save a life.
