Meeting for I-75 Express lanes project held

Project to begin in 2014

MIRAMAR, Fla. – An industry workshop was held for those wanting to be involved in the I-75 Express lanes project.

Hundreds showed up to the workshop at the Miramar Cultural Center, including contractors and engineers, to learn more about the project.

The project will install express lanes on an 18 mile stretch of the interstate from where I-75 meets I-595 in Broward County to the S.R. 826 in Miami-Dade County.

"Anybody that drives 75 knows that it's very congested in the morning and afternoon. These express lanes will take that long-distance traffic, the traffic that say is going from Weston to Miami, it'll take them out of the regular-use lanes and a lot of people will choose to use the express lanes because it will get them there faster," said Barbara Kelleher with the Florida Department of Transportation.

The new lanes will be built in the grassy median that separates the northbound and southbound lanes.

Bids on the project will be accepted this year. Construction is scheduled to start early next year.
