Miami Beach police fire sergeant accused of getting drunk at off-duty job

Mike Muley accused of drinking while working security at Mango's Tropical Cafe

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. ā€“ A Miami Beach police sergeant accused of drinking while working off-duty at a nightclub last July has been fired from the police department.

"My action speaks for itself," Miami Beach Police Chief Daniel Oates said Friday. "This officer terribly embarrassed the police department and all his peers, as well as the entire city of Miami Beach."

Oates suspended the police department's policy of allowing officers to work off-duty security jobs at nightclubs in the city after the incident involving former Sgt. Mike Muley.

Police said the incident was reported to authorities by an anonymous caller, who claimed to see Muley drinking at Mango's Tropical CafƩ on Ocean Drive.

"We are disappointed in the city's decision to terminate Sgt. Muley," Muley's attorney told Local 10. "We are confident that when all facts come to light, Sgt. Muley will be reinstated."

Police said the midnight shift commander was called to the nightclub, and Muley was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center for medical treatment and alcohol testing.

Muley was a 15-year police veteran. He previously came under fire for his alleged poor response to a call for help the night former Miami Beach police Officer Derick Kuilan crashed his police-issued all-terrain vehicle during an on-duty joyride.
