MIAMI – A Miami firefighter is dead after apparently shooting himself on the Rickenbacker Causeway just before 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Local 10 News has confirmed that the man was an employee at the city of Miami Department of Fire-Rescue.
More than two dozen firefighters were at the scene while Miami police investigated the shooting.
Police said the man, whose name has not been released, was scheduled to work Wednesday and was wearing his uniform.
His co-workers who arrived at the scene huddled together and held a moment of silence for their friend.
"Right now, we're not sure exactly how this happened or why it happened," Capt. Ignatius Carroll. "We do know this is a very sad moment today for the city of Miami Fire Department."
