Miami Jackson Senior High School awards posthumous diplomas to slain students

Pedro Uriarte, Bryan Herrera fatally shot

MIAMI – A Miami high school awarded diplomas Tuesday to two former students who were shot to death before they could graduate.

Posthumous diplomas were presented to the parents of Pedro Uriarte and Bryan Herrera during Miami Jackson Senior High School's graduation ceremony.

Uriarte, 18, was shot and killed for his headphones while walking along a sidewalk in front of a Miami elementary school in November 2014.

Herrera, 16, was riding his bicycle to a friend's house when he was fatally shot in December 2012.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho handed the parents their diplomas.

"It's a day of mixed emotions," Uriarte's brother, Jesus Uriarte, told Local 10 News. "We're happy because we feel like he did deserve this ... but we're sad because he's not here in a physical form."
