Llanes is talking about Officer Rosny Obas. Police said Obas was injured Tuesday when Frantzy Armand, 29, went on a wild crime spree.

"I spoke to him the day of the incident. He's obviously shaken as a result of the event," Llanes said.

The shootout started Tuesday morning on Northwest 79th Street. Police said Obas was trying to pull Armand over when the cab driver opened fire with an assault rifle and stole the officer's car.

After a chase into North Miami and another shootout, Armand was taken into custody.

Local 10 News met Obas in 2013 when he was a recruit with the Miami Police Department.

While Obas was injured, he was not hit by gunfire.

"It's a difficult, life changing scenario to go through, but I think he has the solid ground to recover from that," Llanes said.

Police said a good Samaritan helped pull Obas away from the gunfire -- a gesture that may have helped save that officer's life

"I've spoken to him and he's very proud of what he did, and we're very proud and thankful," Llanes said. "Gratitude goes out to someone who helps an officer. He said it best: God put him there to save the officer's life and that's what he did."
