Miami-Dade police officer honored for helping crash victim

Jonathan Dweck performed CPR on Maritza Medina after crash at US 27, Griffin Road

MIAMI ā€“ The Miami-Dade County Commission on Tuesday honored a police officer who rushed to help a woman involved in a car crash with a driver who was fleeing from police.

On Sept. 18, Miami-Dade Police Officer Jonathan Dweck arrived at U.S. 27 and Griffin Road after Maritza Medina's Mercedes-Benz collided with a car driven by Antonio Feliu. Police say Feliu was fleeing from officers after killing his estranged girlfriend and her daughter.

"I saw the victim (Medina) lying there and I knew immediately I had to give her a chance at life," said Dweck, a 10-year veteran with the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Dweck (pictured) performed CPR but Medina died shortly after the crash.

"When you put your car in between her and the peril that was facing her, you didn't think of yourself," said Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz. "Very pleasant lady, full of life, but unfortunately that's the way things happen in our life."
