A Miami Dade Police Department officer was injured after getting into a confrontation Tuesday night.
The motorcycle officer, who was patrolling the airport area around MIA, is in serious condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital after fighting off his attacker at a Shell station located at N.W. 25th Street and 42nd Avenue.
Officials say the officer suffered stab wounds to his arms and back, and that the suspect even attempted to bite off the officer's thumb.
"He is in uniform, the individual that attacked him saw that he was a police officer," said PBA President John Rivera. "It was a very dangerous situation and he suffered multiple wounds, multiple stab wounds."
The suspect who injured the officer is reported to be deceased.
The injured officer is surrounded by his wife, colleagues and co-workers at the hospital where he will require surgery for his serious injuries.
"He's a 54 year old officer," said Rivera. "I think he's got 20 or 22 years on, impeccable employee, just praying that he stays alive. Just doing his job and happened to witness something which made him fulfill his duties to this community and took action, and it almost cost him his life," said
