Mother questioned after boy, 3, dies

2 other children taken into DCF custody

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – A 21-year-old woman was taken in for questioning Tuesday morning after her 3-year-old son died.

According to police, at around 3 a.m., officers responded to 12501 NE 13th Avenue after the boy, Ghanson Debrosse, died.

Investigators say he had trauma "on nearly every square inch of his body."

Doctors say the child probably died two to three hours before they saw him. They also say his injuries were both old and new. But how those injuries occurred is still unclear.

The woman, identified as Fafane Caze, was taken to the police station for questioning.

She told detectives the "abuse occurred during a recent trip to Haiti," according to police.

Investigators are now working with Haitian national police to confirm that information.

"Just listening to the investigators, and listening to the mother's explanation, almost brought me to tears, just listening to some of the things that the child had suffered," said North Miami Police Major Neal Cuevas.

Representatives from the Dept. of Children and Families also interviewed the woman. They say she has two other children, a 4-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy. Both of those children are now in DCF custody.

DCF says they have had prior contact with this family in 2010.

"The family received intensive in-home services through Community Based care partners, due to the allegation of domestic violence between the mother and father," said DCF Interim Secretary Esther Jacobo in a report released Tuesday afternoon.

According to DCF report, Caze, tried to attack the boy's father while holding Ghanson. It's alleged that the mother attempted to throw the infant at the father.

Also, according to the DCF report, "there are concerns about the mother's behavior as she is very violent and recently punched a mirror and broke it with her hand."

On Tuesday afternoon, detectives were at Caze's apartment to serve a search warrant.
