Moving company warnings, tips to avoid scams

Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services receives 3,672 consumer complaints in April

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services warns people to do some research before hiring a moving company and signing any contracts.

"Consumers should do their research and understand the contract before signing with a moving company so they are fully aware of all terms and conditions, including what to do if an item is broken or lost," said Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam.

Officials said they received 3, 672 complaints from consumers in April, which led to 351 investigations and the arrest of 11 people. The complaints were filed against various types of businesses in the state of Florida, not just moving companies.

A total of $310,183 was also recovered to victims in Florida.

Below is a list of tips to avoid moving company scams provided by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services:

"-Get at least three estimates from different moving companies.

-Check and make sure the company is registered as a mover with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

-Get referrals from trusted friends or family, and check reviews online for other customers' experiences.

-Read the entire contract and ask questions about any part that is unclear.

-Check the homeowners or renters insurance policy to see if anything damaged or lost during the move would be covered."
