National Hurricane Center monitors potential threat in Atlantic Ocean

Max Mayfield says tropical disturbance could impact South Fla.

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – The former director of the National Hurricane Center said a tropical disturbance brewing in the Atlantic Ocean could pose a threat to South Florida.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center are calling for a 60 percent chance of development in the next five days.

Local 10 News hurricane specialist Max Mayfield said it is likely South Florida could be impacted by this system, which is still more than 1,500 miles away from Miami.

"This is something that South Florida needs to watch," Mayfield told Local10.com.

Mayfield, who led the National Hurricane Center from 2000-07, said he usually doesn't get excited when one computer model shows potential for development. However, Mayfield said all reliable models are showing the chance of development.

"I don't want anybody surprised if we do have a tropical depression or a tropical storm in the next few days," Mayfield said.

The next named storm would be Cristobal.
