OAKLAND PARK, Fla. – A man stormed into an Oakland Park gas station Sunday and opened fire, hitting the owner of the store. Investigators are now looking into the possibility that surveillance cameras may have captured the hold-up.
The Broward Sheriff's office said the victim was closing up shop at the Valero at 1251 Northeast 45th St., just east of Dixie Highway, when the gunman stormed into the place demanding money.
That's when some sort of struggle broke out between the two, and shots were fired.
Deputies searched for the crook by air and ground but had little luck in finding him.
"We heard the sirens and we saw deputies flooding the scene, so we came over here and we got here. We saw all the cop cars and the ambulance. We saw someone escorted out of the gas station and then the ambulance took off," said Ryan Sullivan.
That someone who was escorted out of the gas station was the victim's wife.
Deputies said the two were about to start counting money when a man wearing a mask was able to get inside the business.
"We saw that there was people still at the gas pump and they were being questioned about what exactly they saw," Sullivan added. "It is kind of surprising to hear that this did happen, but unfortunately stuff does happen."
Detectives spent part of the night questioning two people who pulled up to the gas station minutes after the shooting, not realizing what happened.
The victim's wife, who was inside the store at the time of the shooting, wasn't hurt. The identities of the two have not been released.
The victim was listed in serious condition at the hospital. His name wasn't immediately released.
