MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. – An off-duty Miramar firefighter helped save a couple from a burning car Sunday in Martin County.

The rescue took place just after 4 p.m. in a wooded area off Kanner Highway, near a Race Trac gas station, the Martin County Sheriff's Office reports.

The car had hit a pole and caught fire.

Deputy David Yun, who was in the area, had spotted several people running toward the vehicle, which had smoke and flames coming out of its front end.

Yun approached the car and began to assist Capt. Bruce Hill, who was trying to get the female driver out, the Sheriff’s Office said.

A male passenger was extracted from the vehicle by the deputy.

Shortly after the rescue, the car became  fully engulfed and parts of it exploded, deputies said.

An off-duty nurse assisted the victims until paramedics arrived.

The couple were taken to a hospital.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Miramar Fire Rescue officials took to Facebook to praise their colleague on Sunday.

"We are very proud of Captain Bruce Hill, the nurse and Deputy Yun’s actions," they wrote in part on Facebook. "We wish the couple a speedy recovery."
