Pedestrian killed by taxi in downtown Miami hit-and-run crash

Luggage apparently belonging to victim found in street

MIAMI – A pedestrian was killed after being hit by a taxi cab in downtown Miami early Thursday morning.

Miami police said the driver who struck the man along Biscayne Boulevard at Northeast Fourth Street left the scene.

Officer Frederica Burden said the cab was later found in the 11900 block of Biscayne Boulevard.

Several blocks near Bayside Marketplace were roped off for several hours as police investigated the fatal crash.

Police said luggage was found in the street, which is believed to have belonged to the victim. Police said the victim is believed to be in his 60s.

Detectives believe the driver rents the vehicle from the Yellow Cab company.

"You would think that they would be a little more responsible," Burden said.

Police did not release the name of the driver, but he has retained an attorney who told Local 10 News that his client is innocent.

"He didn't have a suspended driver's license. He didn't have a criminal record. He didn't have any warrants out for him," attorney Michael Kaufman said. "He didn't cause the accident."

The victim's identity was not immediately released.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call police.
