SUNRISE, Fla. -

An argument about a basketball game led a student's stabbing at a South Florida high school Thursday morning, police said.

Sunrise police said Piper High School senior Kimanie King, 18, stabbed the 16-year-old sophomore multiple times with a folding pocket knife at the school's gymnasium.

The victim, identified by family members as Urique Wilson, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center. He suffered multiple stab wounds, the most serious to his upper chest, and was listed in stable condition.

Joseph Watson told Local 10 he was hysterical upon learning that his son had been stabbed.

"I'm just thankful my son is OK," he said.

Police said King left the gym, got a knife and returned to stab the student.

King faces charges of attempted murder and possession of a weapon on school grounds.

"I pray for him," Joseph Watson said. "That's the only thing I can say to him."

Father of stabbing victim speaks to Local 10

YOU COMING UP IN A FEW MINUTES. LIVE IN MIAMI, I'M ROGER LOHSE. TONIGHT WE'RE HEARING FROM THE FATHER OF A TEEN WHO WAS STABBED TODAY AT HIS HIGH SCHOOL IN SUNRISE. THAT TEEN WAS STABBED A NUMBER OF TIMES WITH A POCKET KNIFE. HE'S RECOVERING AT BROWARD HEALTH MEDICAL CENTER, AND THAT'S WHERE WE FIND LOCAL10 NEWS INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER ROSS PALOMBO. THAT TEEN HAS STABBED SEVERAL TIMES. THE WORST CUT WAS TO HIS CHEST 1 A 2-1/2 INCH GASH. TONIGHT AT THE HOSPITAL HE IS IN STABLE CONDITION AFTER EMERGENCY SURGERY, AND HIS FUR FATHER RECOUNTED THAT SURGERY FOR US IN EXCRUCIATING DETAIL. HE IS ALIVE. URIQUE WILSON ALIVE AND RUSHED INTO EMERGENCY SURGERY WITH THREE SEPARATE STAB WOUNDS. I WAS HELICOPTER. THAT'S MY RESPONSIBLE YOU CAN IMAGINE. IT'S MY FIRSTBORN. FATHER JOSEPH WATSON WAS IN THE OPERATING ROOM AS HIS SON'S WOUNDS WERE SEWN UP. SEE WHERE THE BADGE AT RIGHT THERE? IT'S LIKE A 2-1/2 INCH WOUND RIGHT THERE. Reporter: NOW, AFTER SURGERY HE BELIEVES HE WILL PHYSICALLY RECOVER BUT WILL LONG STILL STRUGGLE WITH THE TRAUMA OF BEING TAKEN DOWN DURING GYM. WHAT DID HE SAY TO YOU? IS HE TERRIFIED? HOW IS HE FEELING. HE IS TERRIFIED. IMAGINE, HE'S 15 YEARS OLD. HE GOT STABBED, YOU KNOW. THAT'S ANY PARENT'S NIGHTMARE RIGHT THERE. Reporter: THIS NIGHTMARE WAS A 2-INCH BLADE WITH ONE OF THE CUTS STRIKING ONLY CENTIMETERS AWAY FROM HIS HEART. THE ONLY THING MY MAIN CONCERN, THAT MY SON IS OKAY. Reporter: OKAY EXCEPT FOR THE THOUGHTS OF HIS FELLOW STUDENT, THOUGHTS THAT ARE PAINFULLY IN THE PARENTS MINDS, TOO. DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY TO HIM? I PRAY FOR HIM. THAT'S ALL THAT I CAN SAY, SIR. WHILE URIQUE IS EXPECTED TO BE OKAY AND MAKE A FULL RECOVERY, HE'S HERE IN STABLE CONDITION TONIGHT BUT DOCTORS WANT TO KEEP HIM HERE OVERNIGHT TO TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT HIM. HIS FATHER, BY THE WAY, SAID HA HE BELIEVES HIS FATHER SURVIVED THIS BECAUSE HE IS AN ATHLETE AND HAS A LARGE CHEST. HE BELIEVE ALL THAT MUSCLE STOPPED THE BLADE BEFORE IT COULD GET TO HIS HEART.

Police said the stabbing was not related to a fight between two students last week that ended with one boy in the hospital and another in jail.

Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said no other students were involved in Thursday's stabbing and he believes the school is safe.
