MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A pizza deliveryman was shot and robbed Sunday in southwest Miami-Dade County.
Miami-Dade police said the Pizza Hut driver was ambushed by two masked gunmen outside 148 SW 96th Court.
Gustavo Gutierrez-Escoria, 59, was delivering pizza to the home at the time of the attack. When Gutierrez-Escoria arrived, nobody answered the door, so he called the number on the order, police said.
Someone on the telephone told Gutierrez-Escoria to wait at the home so he could get some cash from a nearby automatic teller machine, police said.
As Gutierrez-Escoria waited to make the delivery, he was confronted by the gunmen, who demanded money and shot him as he tried to get away.
His daughter, Silvia Gutierrez, said her father was shot as many as five times and said the first bullet went through his shoulder.
"He called me. He told me, 'I was shot and I am bleeding. Call an ambulance,'" Gutierrez said. "I knew he was working, so I knew it was bad."
Police confirmed Gutierrez-Escoria was shot multiple times. They said he drove to the Pizza Hut, where co-workers called 911.
Gutierrez-Escoria was in the intensive care unit at Kendall Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.
Gutierrez said her father was talking Monday afternoon and is expected to be OK.
"He might not even realize how much he overcame (Sunday) because it was all luck," she said.
