KEY WEST, Fla. – An inmate being held in a Plantation Key jail is facing a new charge after he tried to escape, Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

Justin Jacobs, 33, jumped onto a table in the recreation yard April 15 and tried to unwind parts of a metal fence near the ceiling, Herrin said.

Jacobs jumped off the table when a corrections deputy appeared, but a check of the fence revealed that he had managed to create an opening that was later repaired, Herrin said.

The inmate has since been transferred to the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island.

Jacobs was arrested in March by Key West police on a grand theft charge. He was also arrested in February on burglary and theft charges.
