Takesha Hayes, 39, killed Sunday morning

MIAMI – Police are searching for the person responsible for a fatal hit-and-run crash Sunday morning.

A woman in a motorized wheelchair was struck by a car at the intersection of Northwest Third Avenue and Northwest 54th Street about 2:40 a.m.

Miami police said Takesha Shawanna Hayes, 39, was traveling on the south side of 54th Street. She was on the sidewalk starting to enter the first lane to cross when she was struck and killed. She died at the scene.

"These hit-and-run accidents are happening way too often," Officer Kenia Fallat said. "The minute you leave the scene of an accident, the charges become serious."

So far there is no description on the car that hit Hayes, but police said the vehicle has possible front end damage.

Police said speed was a factor.

Anyone with any information on the hit-and-run is asked to contact the Miami Police Department at 305-603-6525.
