Police search for man who knocked customer into coma

Victim punched after confronting man about cutting in line

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Police are trying to identify a man who was caught on surveillance video punching a man unconscious at a Miami Beach convenience store.

The incident happened Dec. 1 at the M&L Food Market on Collins Avenue.

Miami Beach police said Mohammad Hussein, 58, was standing in the checkout line to pay for his groceries when another man stepped in front of him. Police said Hussein confronted the man about cutting in front of him when the man turned around and punched Hussein in the face.

Surveillance video released Tuesday showed Hussein fall to the floor while the man ran out of the store.

A cashier who was working at the store said Hussein is a regular customer.

"The more he kept talking, the more aggravated they got at each other," Brenda Fernandez recalled to Local 10 News.

Hussein was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he remains in a coma. Police said he suffered bleeding to his brain.

The man who punched Hussein is believed to live in the same neighborhood as the store.

Anyone who recognizes him is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers 305-471-TIPS or the Miami Beach Police Department at 305-673-7901.
