CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Several law enforcement departments across Florida are using COPDOTS, which helps police officers track down stolen property.
On Tuesday, a spokeswoman for COPDOTS showed off the technology with the Coral Springs Police Department.
Users can buy a pen, which dispenses 3,500 unique sets of digits that can be registered into COPDOTS online database with a user's contact information.
"The officers are provided these readers by our company, and if you hover over, it illuminates," said Tina Vajanyi with COPDOTS. "You can put it on jewelry, you can put it on collectables, you can put it on electronics. It doesn't damage anything."
"In other communities, they've seen reductions in property crimes of up to 40 percent, which is huge," said Coral Springs Police Chief Tony Pustizzi. "Obviously South Florida, especially southeast Florida, we do have a lot of property crimes that occur so anything that we can do -- to deter, to arrest, to prosecute -- in the law enforcement field is tremendous."
Lowe's sells the COPDOTS pens for $29 a piece.
