Miami-Dade ordinance requires candidates to identify paid absentee ballot workers

$5K penalty to be taken from candidate's personal funds

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Commissioners Wednesday passed an ordinance that requires candidates running for a county or municipal office to identify paid campaign workers who help with absentee ballots

According to the county, new decree requires a candidate to file an electronic report, concurrently with the mandatory financial reports, identifying campaign workers employed by the campaign who take part in absentee ballot-related campaign activities.

The form will be created by the Supervisor of Elections and will carry penalties of up to $5,000 for failure to report. The fine cannot be paid as a campaign expense, but must come from the candidate's personal funds.

The ordinance was sponsored by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz.

"This ordinance gets us one step closer to restoring the confidence of our residents in the electoral process," said Diaz. "Candidates as well as paid campaign workers should be held accountable for their actions."
