BSO: Human remains found in carry-on baggage at FLL

Pottery contains human skull pieces

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Transportation Security Administration agents found pottery filled with dirt and human skull fragments inside a carry-on bag at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Two women heading to Baltimore were carrying the bag on their AirTrain fight when the discovery was made in Terminal 1 at the Concourse C checkpoint about 3 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Investigators told Local 10's Christina Vazquez the passengers were Santeria priestess from Baltimore, who traveled to Cuba for religious training.

The women said they purchased the pots at a religious shop, saying they are for "protection."

No charges will be filed since BSO said they were not aware bone fragments were in the pots. The pots were sealed, and the fragments were discovered when one of them broke.

BSO said they will be in touch with Cuban officials. The women boarded their flight to Baltimore Wednesday evening. They were allowed to take the rest of their items in the carry-on luggage.

The bones are currently at the medical examiner's office for further evaluation and confirmation. The Department of Homeland Security is now handling the investigation.
