Proposed budget cuts funding to Pets' Trust

Michael Rosenberg, critics upset over proposed funding

MIAMI – A voter-approved plan to turn the Miami-Dade County's animal shelter into a "no-kill" one may lose funding.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez's proposed budget cut funding for the Pets' Trust from $19 million to $4 million.

"The promise was to help stop the killing," said Michael Rosenberg, founder of the Pets' Trust Miami. "We need to spay and neuter 75,000 animals a year so we don't have more and more animals that keep coming to the shelter to be killed. That's not even part of that new plan."

A spokesman for the mayor's office said he asked the budget department to tweak the numbers.

"I can show you articles from the last 50 years where we've been tweaking and tweaking and tweaking," said Rosenberg. "We didn't run this campaign to tweak. We ran this campaign to solve -- it's kind of an interesting word -- solve the problem."

Gimenez presents his budget to the county commission on Tuesday.
