Rep. Joe Garcia's chief of staff resigns

Jeffery Garcia allegedly took part in ballot requesting fraud

MIAMI ā€“ Congressman Joe Garcia's chief of staff has resigned, admitting to taking part in a scheme to manipulate last year's election.

Jeffery Garcia, no relation to the congressman, took responsibility for a ballot fraud scheme where hundreds of absentee ballots were requested for last year's August primary.

"We were angry and tremendously bothered by this," Rep. Garcia said during a news conference on Saturday morning. "I can't tell you the disappointment we feel about what has happened. I've marked my career on having a position of strength on these issues, and there can be zero tolerance of anything like this."

Rep. Garcia says he has asked an attorney to investigate, and interview all of his staffers. He said that no ballots were touched, and the vote count was not effected.

"I think it was a well-intentioned attempt to maximize voter turnout," Garcia said.

None of the 'phantom ballot requests' were filled because election department software flagged them as suspicious. Requesting an absentee ballot that isn't for you or a close family member is a third degree felony.

Congressman Joe Garcia released the following statement:

"I cannot express how shocked, disappointed and deeply saddened I am about the actions of my former Chief of Staff. Yesterday was the first I had heard of this, and as soon as I found out I relieved Jeffrey Garcia of his role immediately.

South Florida families need to know that I am committed to the public trust and will be diligent about getting to the bottom of this matter.

I have hired William Barzee to launch an internal investigation into the matter. I will also fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation being done by the authorities.

While I am deeply disappointed in this attempt to influence the primary election, it's important to note that no ballot was touched and the integrity of the election remains intact. My focus continues to be working for the people of Florida's 26th District."
