Miami apartment building evacuated after fire

Fire starts on 3rd floor of Oak Grove Apartments

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – The calm of the first day of the new year was broken as firefighters discovered a fire in a vacant apartment off Northeast Sixth Avenue and 155th Street early Thursday morning.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the fire started in a vacant unit on the third floor of the Oak Grove Apartments.

Residents living on the third and fourth floors were removed from the building while firefighters battled the flames.

"Everybody will remain outside until the smoke is completely clear and until we test the unit for carbon monoxide and can tell its safe for them to return," Chief Hugh Bruder told Local 10 News.

Residents were expected to be allowed back inside later on New Year's Day.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
