Kim accused of driving drunk, killing pregnant woman

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A woman accused of driving drunk and crashing into a cabana in March of 2012, killing a pregnant woman, waived her appearance at a scheduled hearing Thursday morning.

Rosa Rivera Kim, 34, is charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter and DUI property damage.

Fort Lauderdale police said Kim's blood-alcohol level was 0.24 percent after she crashed her car into a cabana at a Fort Lauderdale hotel on March 18, 2012, killing Alanna DeMella, 26, and her unborn baby.

DeMella was seven months pregnant. She and her husband were vacationing in Fort Lauderdale, and she had just gone into the restroom at the cabana when the car crashed into it.

Investigators said Kim admitted to ordering a martini and an appetizer at a nearby restaurant shortly before the crash. Kim said she did not remember the impact, according to police.

Kim has pleased not guilty. Her attorney appeared on her behalf during Thursday's hearing.

The next status hearing is scheduled for Oct. 31st.
